Interview With Fashion Designer Dushky

Andreea Muntean - better known as Dushky - is a young fashion designer and artist from Timisoara, Romania. Although she just recently graduated, and is now working on her Master of Arts degree, Dushky already is one of the most well known Romanian designers her age, having been featured on a variety of different publishings and websites. Her work ranges from avant garde and use of unconventional materials to urban wear, which she often models herself. Also, aside from fashion design, Dushky also creates paintings and hand-made accessories.
Here's an exclusive interview were Dushky shares fashion tips, talks about her current and upcoming work, how her art background influenced her career in fashion design and more:

Tell me a bit about yourself – who is Dushky?
Dushky is a heartist that represents me, as a creative person and represents my point of view over art and life itself.

Painting was always a passion of yours, but at what point did you decide to pursue a career in fashion design?
After I went to art school in the 5th grade, I started drawing fashion sketches being inspired by the exhibitions held in the corridors of my school by the high school students. I think it was that moment when I had to choose what artistic profile I was going to follow that I decided to study fashion design. And I chose fashion because I saw it as a challenge, because I received good critiques on my fashion illustration and because someone saw a bright future for me in this domain. I came to love it.

How would you describe your work?
I think it would have to be simply complicated, colourful, detailed and polished.

Where do you draw inspiration from in your projects?
I find inspiration in everything. I think the best ideas come from things that have absolutely no connection with what I do. I think that is a good step for ingenuousness and innovation.

What part of your personality is reflected in your creations?
I am a very conscientious, meticulous, organised person and I think that is very well reflected in my work. I have to put passion and fun into my work, otherwise the result won’t reflect me.

Colour or grayscale?
Colour. Definitely.

What are your plans for the near future? Should we expect a new collection?
Well, I am working on numerous projects, some fashion related, some that imply art, graphics, street art, crafting, painting, illustration and so on… I like to keep myself challenged on every level. But, a collection is coming soon, I guarantee.

Your favorite clothing style?
I don’t think you can call it a certain something because it is influenced by so many styles. I made up a word for it though, it’s Eclectic Electric Retro Rock.

Your work has been mentioned a lot lately around the web (Abduzeedo, deviation of the day on Deviantart, etc.) How does it make you feel to get such great feed-back on your work?
It is always a feeling of gratefulness and joy to know that what I do is appreciated by so many people. It’s uplifting to find I can relate to so many people through art. I love it and I’m very thankful.

Who is your favorite fashion designer?
Alexander McQueen was. No one can top what he did.

3 fashion tips that everyone should know.
Putting the same colours in your entire outfit does not mean you match.
You will always look good if you dress appropriately for your body shape.
Being stylish and fashionable does not mean following every trend.

I’ll leave the last words for you.
Endings are always the hardest.

  1. I love her fashion sketches. Rarely have I seen others as detailed and so wonderfully colored. And that bolero with huge round shoulders made of leather stripes is awesome! Wonderful job!

  2. well that bolero is actually made out of paper! The funny thing is I told Dushky a couple of days ago that she really succeeded in making unconventional materials like that look high-fashion. So I guess I was right :D
